Model Dares to Challenge Status Quo

How often do you hear about young women leaving their homes to pursue a modelling career elsewhere? Often enough. How often do you hear about a youngwoman leaving her home in Nigeria to pursue modelling in South Africa? Probably not as often. Aspiring models are often jetting off to Europe or the States. The likes of Candice Swanepoel and Aamito Lagum are amongst the few. Not surprising either, since Europe and the US are such pioneers in the industry.

One young woman felt the need to challenge the status quo. She sought to do what she loves and pursuing a career whilst still on the very continent she grew up. Anthony Oluwabukola is from Nigeria and she started modelling in 2012 - after a friend of hers introduced her to the world of modelling. Anthony signed up with Beth modelling agency in Nigeria, her first big show being Arise Magazine Fashion Week in 2012. The gorgeous model won the title of 'The New Face of Arise Magazine'.

That was just the beginning of her incredible journey. Later that year, she entered a competition - she didn't win that one, but she was not deterred. That experience helped Anthony realize that she still had a lot to offer. Fast-forward to 2014, and yet another competition. This time round, Anthony won and the prize was to move to South Africa andsign a contract with one of South Africa's most reputable agencies; Ice Modelling Agency. Quite the journey she's had and she has persevered and strutted her way to a promising career in an industry she loves.

Anthony has faced challenges along the way, as being the new face in an industry like hers has it's adversities, especially in a competitive city like Johannesburg. However she has come above it all and cites Fashion Week as one of her most exciting experiences since being in South Africa. With the global focus shifting to Africa (in fashion and other industries), perhaps ourhomegrown talent need not jet off to foreign lands, but like Anthony,  make a mark on this very continent that is ripe with opportunities.
